Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Christine Chavez of Modesto.
According to Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear, employees from Grover Landscape Services were mowing the grass in Beard Brook Park, south of Yosemite Avenue along Dry Creek.
One of the crew members noticed a body in the grass that had already been mowed.
As a result, the crew member immediately called 911.
During the Modesto City Council meeting, Dez Martinez from the homeless advocacy group We Are Not Invisible spoke on behalf of Chavez’s father.
Martinez explained that Chavez was sleeping on the grass when the lawn mower hit her.
However, the landscaper, driving a John Deere tractor with a pull-behind mower, apparently did not see her. The reason remains unclear since Chavez was not in a tent.
This incident marks the second fatality in Modesto where a crew unintentionally caused harm to a homeless person while cleaning up an area.
