Oakhurst, CA (August 8, 2023) – Wayne Franklin Pipes (52) died at the scene following an Oakhurst propane truck crash near Road 222 and Road 220. According to ABC30, the crash occurred before 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
A 52-year-old propane driver, Wayne Franklin Pipes, died at the scene of an Oakhurst truck crash after his truck overturned near Road 222 and Road 220.
The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal Oakhurst propane truck crash near Road 220 and 222 in Madera County.
The accident resulted in the fatality of a propane driver, identified as 52-year-old Wayne Franklin Pipes.
According to Oakhurst California Highway Patrol Sgt. Vicente Villegas, the collision occurred when a propane truck overturned as it traveled westbound on Road 222 and had a hard brake application for unknown reasons, causing it to swerve to the right shoulder and strike the embankment.
Despite wearing his seatbelt, Pipes was partially ejected from the truck during the collision. He then succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.
The propane tank on the truck was nearly empty; however, a minor leak prompted the closure of sections of Road 222.
As investigators work to discover the circumstances leading to this Oakhurst truck crash, Oakhurst resident Chad Van Ness expressed relief that the outcome was not even more severe.
“Those are big propane tanks — if those go up, we wouldn’t be standing right here,” he stated.
Van Ness, a resident near the incident, conveyed his sadness over witnessing such an event unfold so close to his residence.
The California Highway Patrol highlighted the frequent occurrence of collisions in this particular area. Authorities are urging individuals to exercise caution by reducing their speed while traversing this stretch of road.
