A Merced wrong-way crash took the lives of two Modesto residents after a head-on collision near Atwater. The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Bryant Noyola, 22, and Norma Rodriguez, 49.
According to the reports, Noyola, driving a 2002 Hyundai Elantra in the wrong direction on the Highway, collided head-on with a Chevy Tahoe. The impact caused the Tahoe to flip onto its roof and catch fire.
Responders pulled Rodriguez from the Tahoe, but she succumbed to her injuries.
Unfortunately, the California Highway Patrol officers pronounced both Rodriguez and Noyola dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Gonzalo Ahumbra, the 43-year-old Modesto resident driving the Tahoe, and two rear passengers managed to escape the vehicle as it caught fire.
Furthermore, Ahumbra sustained significant injuries, while his other passengers, Cecilia Jimenez, 19, of Mountain View, and a 17-year-old Modesto girl, suffered moderate injuries.
Responders then took them to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.
According to the preliminary investigation, Noyola was traveling north in the southbound lanes at a high speed of 80 to 90 mph when the collision occurred with the Tahoe, which was traveling at around 65 mph.
CHP officers had received a call about a wrong-way driver shortly before the collision. As of Monday, it remained unclear whether Noyola was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The investigation into the Merced wrong-way crash is ongoing.
