Alameda Man Sustains Major Injuries in East Bay Fireworks Accident
Alameda, CA (June 9, 2022) – An illegal fireworks accident in Alameda left a man critically injured in East Bay. According to KRON 4, the accident happened at around 10:15 pm within the Alameda Point area.
An illegal fireworks accident in the Alameda Point area left a man in critical condition.
According to authorities, the fireworks display was meant to be part of a graduation celebration. Then, one of the men in the vicinity of the show got severely injured in the accident. Authorities said that the illegal fireworks involved in the accident posed a high risk of critical injury.
The City of Alameda Fire Department division chief Michael Williams shared to KRON 4, “for fireworks to cause this type of injury, it would most likely have to be a professional-grade aerial device – meaning it launches up in the air as it explodes.”
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) bomb squad then executed a demo using the same grade of illegal fireworks. The squad also showed how these illegal fireworks function. They did this in an effort to prevent people from using illegal fireworks.
ACSO spokesperson Ray Kelly also noted, “they’re very dangerous.” He then shared with KRON 4 that a person in Reno also sustained injury and lost a hand due to a similar accident.
According to KRON 4, most fireworks are illegal and unsafe in Alameda County. However, the county has exceptions in some areas, such as Dublin and Union City. Public officials try their best to prevent the illegal use of fireworks. However, some people choose to ignore the risks and continue using these fireworks. Williams also shared his thoughts about fireworks use on the Fourth of July.
He said, “every year on the fourth of July, it is like a war zone in Alameda and Oakland, where fireworks are going off… It’s impossible to track down every report of fireworks. It’s just absolutely insane to work on the 4th of July for a firefighter, police officer, or anybody in public safety.”
Public safety officials also emphasize the danger of using illegal fireworks. They discourage their use
