Authorities arrested an Australian tourist with two counts of vehicular manslaughter following a fatal San Mateo County crash on state Highway 84.
Police revealed the victims’ identities as 80-year-old La Honda residents Jack Davis and Linda Davis.
On Wednesday, prosecutors announced these charges against the tourist driver, 31-year-old Luke Nardini. Nardini made his initial court appearance on Tuesday to confront these charges.
According to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, Nardini was operating a BMW, heading eastward on the highway. At the time, there was a closure of the eastbound lane, prompting Nardini to transition into the westbound lane.
Unfortunately, he failed to return to the appropriate side of the road, moving in the wrong direction. The driver mentioned he wrongfully traveled on the left side of the road, following the protocols in Australia. The prosecutor said, “He (forgot) to move back to the right side of the road, as they drive on the left in Australia.”
The California Highway Patrol reported that a Ford Taurus, navigating the westbound lane through a blind curve, collided with Nardini’s BMW.
Tragically, this collision led to the tragic deaths of the two rear passengers in the Taurus. Additionally, two other Taurus occupants sustained injuries from the crash. Responders then transported them to a hospital for medical treatment.
Moreover, authorities apprehended and charged Nardini regarding this San Mateo County crash. During his arraignment on Tuesday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Furthermore, he has a bail set at $20,000, and the case has been scheduled for a bail motion on September 19, with a pre-trial hearing slated for October 11. The trial will commence on November 17.
J&M Tip: Exercise heightened vigilance while driving, particularly in locations where recent accidents have taken place, to minimize the risk of being part of such incidents. Moreover, consider alerting the authorities to attend to the collision.
