Merced, CA (March 7, 2023) – Gerardo Gonzalez (55) of Sacramento was identified as the fatality in a big rig crash involving a suspected DUI driver in Merced. According to Merced SunStar, the crash occurred around 11:23 pm on Monday.

The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal big rig crash involving a suspected DUI driver on Highway 99 in Merced.
A big rig driver was found pinned inside the big rig. He reportedly died at the scene.
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Gerardo Gonzalez.
According to authorities, Gonzalez was driving a 2021 International big rig in the number 2 lane of Highway 99. When a driver, identified as Anthony Carrasco of Ceres, attempted to pass Gonzalez.
Carrasco was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed. While attempting to pass, Carrasco’s vehicle became crammed between the big rig and the guardrail.
This caused the big rig to jackknife and then overturn down an embankment.
Later, Carrasco was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
