According to California Highway Patrol Officer Maria Barriga, a Chevy Express van, driven by 19-year-old Javier Mendez Santos from Bakersfield, was traveling eastbound on Highway 166, just east of Aliso Canyon Road.
For unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off the roadway onto the right shoulder and collided with a dirt embankment, resting on its roof on the road.
Unfortunately, a 23-year-old Bakersfield woman, who was a passenger, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. However, her identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Meanwhile, the driver and an unidentified male passenger from Bakersfield suffered significant injuries.
Responders then took them to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, but details regarding their conditions were not immediately available.
