Trinity County, CA (September 13, 2023) – Two drivers, Rebecca A. Helsley of Weaverville and Nancy A. Rich of Cottonwood, sustained injuries in a Highway 299 multi-car crash after vehicles collided near a Lewiston construction zone. According to ABC7 KRCR, the police responded to the crash about 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Two drivers, Rebecca A. Helsley of Weaverville and Nancy A. Rich of Cottonwood, sustained injuries in a Highway 299 multi-car crash after vehicles collided near a Lewiston construction zone.
A Highway 299 multi-car crash resulted in one individual sustaining suspected severe injuries and another with suspected minor injuries.
According to the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 1 p.m., Trinity River CHP units responded to reports of a four-vehicle traffic collision on Highway 299 west of Fawn Lodge Road.
Following an investigation, the CHP determined that Joseph A. Short of Weaverville was traveling westbound on Highway 299, approaching a construction zone near Lewiston managed by CalTrans.
Meanwhile, Rebecca A. Helsley of Weaverville, Nancy A. Rich of Cottonwood, and Nicole M. Ross of Lewiston stopped their vehicles within the construction zone. Helsley’s vehicle was at the rear of the line of traffic.
Upon realizing that the traffic had stopped, Short applied the brakes of his 2004 Ford F-350. Unfortunately, he failed to stop, colliding with Short’s Ford F-350 and Helsley’s Jeep. This collision caused Helsley’s vehicle to hit Rich’s Mitsubishi, which, in turn, was pushed forward into Ross’ Chevrolet.
Helsley continued southwesterly, colliding with the roadside barrier south of the roadway. The Mitsubishi also went in a southwest order, descending an embankment and hitting several trees.
Moreover, Helsley sustained severe injuries. Paramedics subsequently transported her, along with Rich, with minor injuries, to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
Meanwhile, paramedics evaluated Short and Ross at the scene.
The cause of this Highway 299 multi-car crash remains under investigation, with the CHP reporting that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the incident.

More About Car Accident Liability
Various circumstances of the car accident can pinpoint the liability of damages. In some instances, thorough investigations can reveal careless behavior. Any Sacramento or Los Angeles car accident lawyer recognizes that fault has four basic levels:

- Intentional misconduct
- Strict liability
However, different state laws can have variations of applicable traffic laws. For example, in some states, multiple drivers can be liable for an accident. This is why thorough investigations are important after a car accident. Having a strong case showing the liability of the at-fault party can help guarantee your compensation.
