Highway 92 Pedestrian Crash Left One Fatal in San Mateo, CA
San Mateo, CA (September 20, 2023) – One pedestrian succumbed to fatal injuries after being hit by a patrol vehicle driven by a California Highway Patrol officer in a Highway 92 pedestrian crash. According to the East Bay Times, the crash was reported around 10:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
A Highway 92 pedestrian crash left one fatal after being hit by a Dodge Charger patrol car.
A California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson confirmed a pedestrian crash on eastbound Highway 92 near Delaware Street in San Mateo.
Authorities explained that an adult male attempted to cross the eastbound lanes towards the center median when the officer’s vehicle struck him.
Unfortunately, the male pedestrian did not survive, and the medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
At the moment of impact, the officer was driving an unmarked white Dodge Charger patrol vehicle. A handcuffed detainee was in the front-right passenger seat.
Fortunately, neither the officer nor the detained individual sustained injuries.
The accident spot has two lanes and is directly above South Delaware Street. Here, the speed limit is 55 miles per hour.
However, the lighting on this part of the road is notably dim, with headlights being the primary source of illumination.
The rates at which the officer was driving remain unknown as of Thursday afternoon, with officials remarking that the officer had little reaction time to avoid the pedestrian.
Despite the incident, the officer was off duty on Thursday and hasn’t been put on leave.
Currently, there is no information on whether such an action will occur once the officer returns to work.
In response to the accident, authorities closed all eastbound lanes and rerouted traffic to Delaware Street. By 3:40 a.m. on Thursday, all lanes had been reopened.
J&M Tip: Pedestrian crashes are alarmingly dangerous, particularly on highways with scarce or no light. Post ensuring medical care and alerting the relevant authorities, it is important to reach out to a pedestrian accident lawyer.
