I-5 DUI Crash in Carlsbad Killed Female Driver, Driver Arrested for Alleged DUI
Carlsbad, CA (October 25, 2023) – An I-5 DUI crash left a female driver fatal and her passenger injured. Authorities also arrested the driver suspected of DUI. According to NBC San Diego, the accident occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Sunday.

An I-5 DUI crash in Carlsbad involving a Ford Raptor pickup truck and a Nissan Altima sedan killed a female driver and injured her passenger on Sunday.
Additionally, police arrested a 44-year-old man on charges including murder and drunk driving.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the suspect, identified as Andrew David Shaw of Escondido, was traveling southward shortly before 10 p.m. when he collided with the rear of the sedan on the southbound side of the freeway near Cannon Road.
The impact of the collision resulted in severe injuries for both the 31-year-old passenger and the 53-year-old Nissan driver.
CHP public affairs Officer Hunter Gerber disclosed that paramedics brought both women to a trauma center, where, unfortunately, the driver succumbed to her injuries.
At this time, her identity is being withheld, pending notification of her family.
Meanwhile, an ambulance transported Shaw to a hospital to treat his minor injuries.
However, the following morning, police took him into custody on suspicion of multiple charges, including DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, resisting arrest, and first-degree homicide.
The specific reasons behind the latter two charges have yet to be disclosed.
Shaw is incarcerated in the Vista County jail without bail due to this I-5 DUI crash. He also has an arraignment on Wednesday afternoon.
