The California Highway Patrol responded to a deadly car crash near Murphys in Calaveras County on July 20, resulting in one fatality.
Calaveras County Coroner’s Office identified the fatal victim as 35–year-old Jose Juan Villasenorespinoza of Bakersfield.
According to the CHP, Villasenorespinoza drove a 2003 Toyota Camry west on Highway 4 at an estimated speed of 45 mph, accompanied by two passengers, when the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway for reasons unknown onto the north shoulder east of Utica Power House Road.
He then shifted back onto the roadway, going directly into the path of a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by 68-year-old Louis Sweet from Sonora. Sweet traveled east at approximately 45 mph with three juvenile passengers onboard.
Unfortunately, Villasenorespinoza succumbed to his injuries while authorities rushed his passengers to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for urgent medical treatment.
They also took the Toyota Tundra driver with moderate injuries to the same medical center for treatment. Meanwhile, the three juvenile passengers in the Tundra suffered minor injuries.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, and initial findings suggest that fatigue or distracted driving may have played a role in the Murphys car crash.
The CHP also clarified that they do not suspect alcohol or drug involvement.
J&M Tip: Distracted driving happens when a driver engages in any action that draws their focus away from driving. Among the most prevalent distractions drivers face is texting or using their mobile phones while operating a vehicle.
