According to the California Highway Patrol, Manuel Leon, a construction worker serving as a flagman in the 14500 block of Cool Valley Road just before 7 a.m., was struck by a tan Toyota Corolla that then fled the scene.
Despite being airlifted to the hospital, Leon succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the Medical Examiner’s office.
Meanwhile, attending the arraignment hearing on Monday, Leon’s pregnant wife, Monse, expressed affection for her late husband and the father of their soon-to-be three children.
“It was the most amazing marriage anyone could ever ask for,” she remarked.
Moreover, authorities identified both the vehicle and its driver, leading to the arrest of Lopez the following day. The CHP also credited the residents of Valley Center for their crucial role in the investigation.
Lopez faces a potential prison term of 2 to 4 years. However, Monse Leon believes he deserves a life sentence for robbing her of the love of her life.
Lopez’s bail is set at half a million dollars. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 24.
