San Diego, CA (August 1, 2023) – A 12-year-old paddleboarder succumbed to fatal injuries after being involved in a Mission Bay jet-ski crash. According to Fox 5, the collision occurred before 2 p.m. on Saturday.
A 12-year-old paddleboarder succumbed to her injuries after a personal watercraft hit her in a Mission Bay jet-ski crash.
The San Diego Police Department reported a tragic Mission Bay jet-ski crash in the De Anza Cove area where a 12-year-old girl lost her life in a collision with a personal watercraft on Saturday.
According to Lt. Adam Sharki, an 18-year-old man from Bellflower, on a personal watercraft, collided with a young girl who was paddle boarding.
Following the collision, responders immediately brought the victim to the shore and promptly administered CPR before transporting her to a hospital.
Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the medical center.
Furthermore, the incident left both families devastated. Sharki expressed, “Her family is going through an enormous amount. I can’t even imagine what the family is going through, and the other motorist, the boater, an 18-year-old man from Bellflower, I’m sure he’s going through, he didn’t wake up that day anticipating this was going to happen.”
A no-wake zone comprises portions of De Anza Cove, limiting watercraft speed to 5 mph. The authorities stated that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this Mission Bay jet-ski crash.
Moreover, the SDPD Harbor Division is investigating the cause of the collision. Their examination will involve not only interviewing witnesses but also reconstructing the scene.
“Asphalt roads provide a debris field and scuffed tires as evidence,” Sharki clarified. “However, on-the-water collisions lack these physical markers, so investigators employ other methods to reconstruct the sequence of events.”
The investigation process is complex and could take several weeks or months to conclude.
J&M Tip: In certain accidents, investigators may encounter limited evidence to ascertain the cause and sequence of the collision. Moreover, some cases may present conflicting pieces of evidence. In such situations, accident reconstruction plays a vital role in identifying the responsible party for the collision and recreating the events leading up to it.
