Modesto Multi-Car Crash Caused Fatal Injuries to Four People, Including a One-Year-Old Girl
Modesto, CA (April 10, 2024) – Clara Howells, (1) of Turlock, Angeles Escoto (19) of Merced, Francis Catano (22) of Merced and Patricia Lopez (60) died in a Modesto multi-car crash on McHenry Avenue just north of Hogue Road. According to ABC10, the crash happened around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

A Modesto multi-car crash caused four individuals to lose their lives on Tuesday. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified them as:
- Clara Howells, aged 1, from Turlock
- Angeles Escoto, aged 19, of Merced
- Francis Catano, aged 22, also from Merced
- Patricia Lopez, aged 60
The California Highway Patrol received reports of a crash on McHenry Avenue just north of Hogue Road. Upon reaching the scene, responders discovered four vehicles with collision damage.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Angeles Escoto was operating a Mitsubishi sedan in McHenry Avenue’s northbound #1 lane. For unknown reasons, the vehicle briefly transitioned into the #2 lane before returning to the #1 lane.
Subsequently, it entered the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with a Toyota SUV driven by Patricia Lopez.
Meanwhile, a pickup truck traveling southbound on McHenry Avenue collided with the Mitsubishi and the Toyota, while a Ram van also struck the Mitsubishi.
Unfortunately, Escoto and her passenger, Francis Catano, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Additionally, responders took Patricia Lopez, the SUV driver, and her passenger, one-year-old Clara Howells, to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The drivers of the Ford and Ram, on the other hand, emerged from the collision unscathed.
Moreover, it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this Modesto multi-car crash.
