The Most Dangerous Type of Intersection in Los Angeles

Modern roads and highways have revolutionized travel, allowing people to reach their destinations more efficiently. Intersections, designed to connect paths and streamline journeys, unfortunately also create potential collision points.

Did you know that in 2020, improper turns resulted in 28,967 accidents in California? Additionally, from 2020 to 2022, 6,466 intersections in Los Angeles witnessed at least one crash injury or fatality.

Given the significant number of motor vehicle collisions at intersections in Los Angeles, our study aims to identify the most hazardous types of intersections. By understanding the dangers, we can take extra precautions when navigating these intersections.

This study has several objectives:

• Identify the most dangerous types of intersections in Los Angeles.
• Analyze the causes of auto crashes at these intersections.
• Propose guidelines for safely crossing different types of intersections.
• Present solutions for dealing with accidents that occur at intersections in Los Angeles.

 

Methodology 

To determine the most dangerous type of intersection in Los Angeles, we identified the 15 neighborhoods with the most auto crashes from 2020 to 2022 from a study by Moneygeek. From this, we identified the type of intersection with the highest number of accidents per neighborhood. 

Moreover, for this study, we will use three different types of intersections according to geometric configurations, namely:

• Crossing-type intersections (four-legged or four-way intersections): where two roads join, generating a four-way crossing pattern with four approaches, one from each direction (north, south, east, and west). 
• Circular intersections (roundabouts, traffic circles, and rotaries): are intersections in which vehicles follow a circular course around a central island or circle. Unlike standard intersections with traffic lights or stop signs, vehicles entering a roundabout yield to traffic already inside the circle, and no traffic signals are used.
• Alternative Intersection Designs: are modern approaches to road intersections that differ from typical designs and are frequently used to improve traffic flow, increase safety, and maximize intersection efficiency. Some examples of this type of intersection design are the following:
  • Diverging Diamond Interchange,
  • Displaced left-turn intersection, 
  • Median U-turn intersection,
  • Restricted crossing u-turn intersections,
  • Quadrant roadway intersection, and 
  • Displaced left-turn interchange. 

 

Key Findings

The danger of an intersection can be affected by various factors such as traffic volume, road design, visibility, local driving patterns, and others. However, some crossings are more prone to accidents than others. From the research conducted, we found out that: 

• Of the 15 most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles, only two are traditional crossing-types.
• None of the intersections are in a circular configuration, and alternative intersection designs.
• 86.67% of the data shows that most intersections with significant accidents are crossing-type with designated left turns.

How Can This Affect Me?

The most common type of intersection involves two roads crossing and approaching each other at different angles, forming a four-legged configuration. Unfortunately, this type of crossing also has the highest number of accidents in Los Angeles, according to the study. 

To combat this problem, local agencies modified traditional intersection designs to improve traffic flow and safety, especially for left-turning vehicles. This includes crossing-type with designated left-turn intersections or auxiliary lanes.

However, despite its goal to reduce traffic collisions, crossing-type intersections with designated left-turn intersections hold the highest number of accidents in the 15 most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles, with 4,012 auto crashes from 2020 to 2022. 

Furthermore, as auto crashes occurring at intersections increase yearly, the government devises and builds modern solutions to combat this, including alternative intersection designs. These types of junctions are created to improve traffic flow, ensure road safety, and maximize intersection efficiency. This goal was seen in the research as none of the 15 most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles were circular intersections or alternative intersection designs. 

Since most drivers encounter modified crossing types of intersections, including those with designated left-turn lanes, road users must understand how these modifications work and how they affect traffic flow to avoid collisions. 

 

Challenges of Left-Turns in Intersections

In the 1970s and 1980s, people were alarmed by the obstructed, blocked views at left-turn lanes. Studies comparing accidents at intersections with and without traffic lights showed that intersections with left turn lanes had more accidents involving left crossings. 

The main reason for these increased accidents was left-turning drivers might have their view obstructed by vehicles turning left in the opposite turn lane, which raises the chance of these drivers making mistakes in assessing gaps in oncoming traffic or not noticing pedestrians crossing the road.

Since then, it has become the government’s goal to eradicate this problem by devising guidelines and several left-turn schemes on divided roadways at intersections. However, car accidents still happen in such areas despite distinct intersectional modifications to ease left-turning.

In 2003, research titled “Safety Effectiveness of Intersection Left- and Right-Turn Lanes,” discovered that adding lanes for left turns was an excellent way to make both rural and city intersections safer, whether they have traffic lights or not. 

If a single left-turn lane is added to a main road, accidents will likely decrease:

• Accidents could decrease by 28% and 44% for rural intersections with four or three roads, respectively. 
• Accidents at intersections with four or three roads in urban areas could be reduced by 27% and 33%, respectively, if a left-turn lane is added. 
• For city intersections with four roads, accidents might go down by 10% with a left-turn lane.

Furthermore, as urban planning engineers and the government continuously strive to think of innovative ways to improve highways and public roads, they designed a left-turn bay in intersections to assist drivers when making a left turn. 

 

However, a study titled “Modeling Left-Turn Blockage and Capacity at Signalized Intersection with a Short Left-Turn Bay” in 2008 discovered the following challenges arise in left-turn bays:

• If the lane for making left turns is not long enough, cars wanting to turn left might get stuck behind cars going straight. 
• This can also happen if there are many left-turning cars, causing them to block the other lanes. Both situations can cause problems at an intersection with a traffic light. 
• When the lane for left turns is blocked by cars going straight, it can handle fewer left-turning cars. 
• If the left-turning cars overflow into the other lanes, it can slow down the cars going straight. 

 

Despite the modifications initiated by the government, accidents at intersections still happen due to several factors, including drivers’ behavior and decision-making. “Characterization of Driving Behaviors Based on Field Observation of Intersection Left-Turn Across-Path Scenarios” confirmed that sight obstruction can make traffic slower and less safe. Additionally, sight obstruction can heavily affect drivers’ decision-making when turning at intersections.

The results showed that when turning cars block the view, it takes longer for drivers making left turns or U-turns to find a safe time to go. When a sight problem arises, drivers also take more time to start turning after the car in front moves. This is because they need extra time to decide if it is safe. This can worsen traffic jams and reduce how much the road can handle. 

On the other hand, when there is not much space between cars, drivers who cannot see well tend to take risks by turning even when it’s not very safe. 

 

The study also observed videos and found more problems when drivers who could not see well tried to fit into small gaps. Additionally, not being able to see well might make drivers act strangely. If a car blocks their view, they might say no to a significant gap but yes to a small one. This could make things more risky and cause problems at intersections where traffic lights don’t protect turns.

In 2020, the Crash Data California State Highways recorded 28,967 accidents due to improper turns, of which 413 were fatal. 

Despite the innovative and modern intersection designs aiming to ensure safety when turning left or right in intersections, these modifications would be counter-progressive if road users failed to observe proper driving behaviors when crossing roads. 

As such, road designs and driving behavior contribute to the risk of intersection traffic accidents. 

 

How to Cross Four-Legged Intersections with Designated Left Turns

Driving safely is essential for navigating any crossroads. Similarly, when turning in intersections, using a designated left-turn lane to travel across different roads requires attentiveness and extra precaution, especially in unsignalized intersections.

When using a designated left turn in a crossing or four-legged intersection, you may follow the steps below to ensure your safety:

• Approach the crossroads slowly and pay attention to traffic signals, signs, and the traffic flow around you.
• Place your vehicle in the designated left-turn lane before crossing.
• Check and anticipate the left-turn signal when turning. You must also watch other traffic signals within the intersection to avoid collisions.
• If oncoming traffic is present, yield to them before turning left. Proceed only when it is safe, and there is a space in traffic. If the intersection is signalized, wait for the left turn signal before turning. 
• Use your vehicle’s turn signal to indicate that you will be crossing. This alerts other drivers to your planned maneuver.
• Complete your left turn when it is safe, and there is a clear opening in the incoming traffic. Keep an eye out for bikers and pedestrians as well.
• If there are pedestrians and they have the right of way, yield to them.
• Once you’ve made your left turn and are on the new route, smoothly pick up speed to keep up with the traffic.

Despite signalized intersections and four-legged crossings with designated left-turn lanes, it is best to adhere to these safety precautions to use the road modification and avoid accidents properly.

As you change lanes, accelerate slightly. Remember that you are traveling slower than the rest of the traffic because you are moving sideways.
