Victims often think compensation only covers medical bills and vehicle repairs, but you can claim much more after a car accident. Depending on your specific situation, you may be entitled to various types of compensation:
Economic Damages: These cover financial losses documented with receipts and records. Examples include:
- Medical Expenses: Hospital bills, medication, and ongoing treatment costs.
- Property Damage: Costs for repairing or replacing your vehicle and other damaged property.
- Lost Wages: Income lost due to inability to work.
- Future Income Loss: Potential earnings lost if you can’t return to your job.
- Out-of-Pocket Expenses: Any additional expenses directly related to the accident.
Non-Economic Damages: These involve intangible losses without a direct monetary value. Examples include:
- Pain and Suffering: Compensation for physical pain endured due to the accident.
- Emotional Distress: Covers psychological impact, including anxiety and depression.
- Loss of Companionship: Compensation for the negative impact on relationships.
- Diminished Quality of Life: Accounts for changes in lifestyle and activities.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Compensation for ongoing mental health issues stemming from the crash.
Punitive Damages: These may be awarded in cases of extreme recklessness, intentional misconduct, or malice by the at-fault party.
While economic damages are supported by documentation, assessing non-economic losses requires a personal injury attorney’s expertise. An experienced car accident lawyer can evaluate these intangible losses, ensure you receive maximum compensation, and determine if you qualify for punitive damages.
