The accident transpired last Tuesday when Rosie Johnson-Stewart, driving a westbound 2008 Ford Edge on Interstate 8 in the Boulevard area, veered off the roadway for unknown reasons.
The SUV overturned and rolled side-over-side down an embankment near McCain Valley Road, eventually coming to rest approximately 300 feet below the freeway, as reported by Cal Fire.
Unfortunately, Johnson-Stewart succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Meanwhile, according to the California Highway Patrol, a 43-year-old male passenger in the vehicle managed to extricate himself from the wreckage and shouted for help, alerting emergency personnel to his location.
Paramedics subsequently airlifted him to a San Diego hospital to receive treatment for severe injuries.
