Escondido, CA (December 20, 2023) – Shevondia Compare-Bell (18) of San Diego died in an Escondido car crash after police pursuit. Police also arrested the driver, 21-year-old John Eugene Brand. According to Patch, the crash happened at around 10:28 p.m. on Monday.

A passenger in a pickup truck lost her life, and another woman sustained injuries from the collision.
According to the investigation, officers responded to reports of theft at Dick’s Sporting Goods on Auto Park Way involving a man and two women.
Upon the officers’ arrival, the suspects fled the scene in a pickup truck. The pursuit led officers east through Escondido onto Washington Avenue.
While attempting to make a high-speed turn onto Fig Street, the driver, identified as 21-year-old John Eugene Brand, lost control, resulting in a collision with a retaining wall.
The impact then ejected both female passengers from the vehicle.
Emergency services transported both women to a hospital. However, one succumbed to fatal injuries.
The second woman, on the other hand, underwent surgery and was expected to survive. She mentioned that she had requested the driver to pull over multiple times, but he refused to allow her to exit the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the driver fled the scene. Fortunately, he was apprehended by officers hiding a block from the crash scene.
Police took him to the Vista Detention Facility and booked him on suspicion of various charges, including vehicular manslaughter, kidnapping, evading police, hit and run resulting in death or injury, burglary, and conspiracy.
Notably, the pickup truck involved in the incident belonged to the U.S. Marine Corps, and authorities recovered stolen clothing items from the vehicle.
