Biker Tris Yasay Killed in Crash Involving Garbage Truck in UC Davis
Davis, CA (May 26, 2022) – Tris Yasay (19), a freshman from UC Davis, died after getting hit by a garbage truck while cycling. According to CBS Sacramento, the incident happened at around 8:00 am on Wednesday.
According to reports, Yasay rode a bicycle to class. She then reached the intersection of Dairy Road and Hutchison Drive where the crash happened. Bike Davis board member Jouke Peutz called the university out for an explanation about this accident.
A Google Streets view of this aforementioned intersection shows the designation of a bicycle lane.
As stated in CBS Sacramento, UC Davis students honored Yasay by holding a memorial at the crash site on Thursday.
UC Davis student Sophia Gomez also shared with CBS Sacramento that the intersection is generally dangerous for cyclists due to lack of space. She said, “I mean this isn’t just some place, I mean this is Dairy Road and Hutchison… I mean, I cross here every day. Everyone does.”
Tris Yasay cycled to class when she got hit by a garbage truck at the Dairy Road and Hutchison Drive intersection.
She continued, “everyone gets a little anxiety. I get a little anxiety crossing here all the time because you just don’t know who’s coming through and who’s going to respect I guess the unspoken courtesy of this particular crosswalk.”
Peutz said that a Ghost Bike Memorial will be erected to honor Yasay. He said, “We just don’t want this whole situation to go forgotten… Because we don’t want this to go unnoticed, right? This is one of our students.”
Yasay was remembered to be a very energetic and enthusiastic student at the UC Davis Department of Plant and Sciences. Armed with her passion and fascination about how plants can help improve people’s lives, Yasay was one of the few students who endeavored into plant sciences. According to a very thoughtful article written by the UC Davis’ College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, her advisor, Prof. Dan Potter described Yasay as a “bright, promising student dedicated to making the world a better place through research and outreach… She had just submitted a plan for her own area of specialization within the plant sciences major,” Potter said. “It was really thoughtful, and I was happy to approve it.”
UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May pens a message of condolence here.
Other UC Davis students also aim to put up a permanent memorial at the intersection for Yasay. She was a freshman majoring in sustainable agriculture. Also, she was set to complete her freshman year in just a few weeks.
