Authorities arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of DUI after allegedly causing a Serra Mesa wrong-way accident on I-15, resulting in the fatality of a 32-year-old woman.
The police identified the woman as 32-year-old Yannira Rodriguez of San Diego.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on southbound I-15 in the Serra Mesa area, south of Aero Drive.
Reports indicate that an Infiniti QX 30 went northbound on the southbound lanes I-15 and hit a Honda Fit driven by Rodriguez.
Firefighters used tools to extricate the driver and a passenger from the damaged Honda Fit. Unfortunately, the driver died at the scene before being taken to a hospital.
Rodriguez, a single mother, was traveling with her 13-year-old daughter at the time of the crash. She suffered significant injuries, and paramedics transported her to a hospital for treatment.
After the initial collision, the Infiniti continued north and struck a Nissan Altima driven by a 58-year-old woman, who remained uninjured. Meanwhile, the Infiniti driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Moreover, police took the driver, identified as James A. Cox of La Mesa, into custody on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving the wrong way causing injury or death.
The victim’s loved ones set up a GoFundMe page to help support her funeral and burial expenses. The page states that Rodriguez graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree and three associate degrees in May.
“She had always worked so hard to be a great mother, provider, and example for her daughter,” mentioned on the page.

More About Car Accident Liability
Various circumstances of the car accident can pinpoint the liability of damages. In some instances, thorough investigations can reveal careless behavior. This can include the simple act of recklessly turning or cutting in front of another vehicle. In terms of determining who is at fault for an accident, this can be defined by common law. Any Sacramento or Los Angeles car accident lawyer recognizes that fault has four basic levels:
- Negligence
- Recklessness (wanton conduct)
- Intentional misconduct
- Strict liability
However, different state laws can have variations of applicable traffic laws. For example, in some states, multiple drivers can be liable for an accident. This is why thorough investigations are important after a car accident. Having a strong case showing the liability of the at-fault party can help guarantee your compensation. Likewise, a car crash attorney can also help you determine all your options, so you can fully recover from the accident. Learn more about car accident lawyers in California here.
